Fusion Support Cards
What makes Fusion Summons arguably harder to pull of than Ritual Summons is that you need not only the fusion card (you can find a list of cards that can fusion summon monsters outside of Polymerization) but also the correct monsters for the Fusion Summon monster you want. As such, Konami has released several cards over the years to help make Fusion Summons easier.
Fusion Substitutes
There are several monsters that can count as a Fusion Material monster for a Fusion monster. However, if you use taht effect, the other material must be correct (Ex. You can't use two monsters that can count as fusion substitutes for a fusion summon, or else all people would run are Fusion substitutes).
Here is a list of monsters whose effect states that they can be used for a Fusion material substitute.
- Beastking of Swamps
- Mystical Sheep #1
- Goddess with the Third Eye
- Versago the Destroyer
- King of Swamp
- The Dark - Hex Sealed Fusion
- The Light - Hex Sealed Fusion
- The Earth - Hex Sealed Fusion
Here is what Fusion Substitutes will NOT cover:
- Monsters for a Fusion Monster that says that it must be Fusion Summoned with the above Materials (Ex. Naturia Exterio)
- Monsters who require monsters of a certain type/attribute (Ex. Evil HERO Dark Gaia, Five-Headed Dragon)
Polymerization Searching
Although not as prominent as Fusion Substitutes, there are several cards that can help you bring Polymerization to/back to your hand.
- King of Swamp, Fusion Sage: Both of these cards add "Polymerization" from your deck to your hand.
- Elemental HERO Woodsman, Monster Eye, Wroughtweiler: These cards add Polymerization from your Graveyard to your hand. The main difference is that Woodsman can also grab it from deck, but it has to be face-up during the Standby Phase, while Monster Eye has you pay 1000 Life Points to grab it from your graveyard only. Wroughtweiler not only has to be destroyed by battle, but you must also target an Elemental HERO in your grave which can make this cadr problamatic in the early game.
- Synchro Fusionist: This card is the most unique of the Polymerzation searchers because it 1.) Has to be used fo a Synchro Summon (making it thew newest member of this list by far), but it can also add a card that has "Polymerization" OR "Fusion" in its name (Ex. Miracle Fusion, Super Polymerization, Fusion Gate)
Elemental HERO Prisma
Elemental HERO Prisma gets his own little section in this page because he does not belong in the "Fusion Substitute " section. Its a monster that can take on the name of any Fusion Material monster by revealing the Fusion Monster and sending one of the Fusion Material pieces from your deck to the Graveyard.
Here is an example of how Elemental HERO Prisma:

Since Elemental HERO Prisma takes on the name of the Fusion Material Monster, it is a very popular in Gladiator Beast decks because it is treated as a "Gladiator Beast" monster. However, to use Gladiator Beasts as a very good example, you would not be able to reveal Gladiator Beast Essedarii because there are no listed Fusion Material monsters to copy.
To summarize, here are the can's and cannot's of Elemental HERO Prisma:
- There must be a listed Fusion Material monster (Ex. Gladiator Beast Bestiari for Gladiator Beast Gyzarus) listed on the Fusion monster.
- You cannot send a monster from the Extra Deck to the Graveyard (Ex. You can't send Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon for Dragon Master Knight, but you can send Black Luster Soldier since Ritual Monsters are found in the Main Deck).
The Hex Sealed Fusions
There are three Hex Sealed Fusions: Light, Dark, and Earth. If you control the other fusion material monster and the Hex Sealed Fusion card, you can contribute that Hex Sealed Fusion card and the other Fusion Material monster to Special Summon the Fusion Monster whose attribute is the same as the Hex Sealed Fusion monster you tributed (Ex. You can contribute The Earth - Hex Sealed Fusion and Mystical Sheep #2 to Special Summon Fusionist). You cannot use a Fusion Substitute for this effect and the Fusion Monster cannot be Special Summoned after it leaves the field (because any monster from the Extra Deck must be Summoned the "proper way" [Fusion monsters are Fusion Summoned, etc.] in order to be Special Summoned from the Graveyard or if banished).
